New to First Parish?

We are a family-friendly, welcoming Unitarian Universalism congregation located in the heart of Portland, Maine. Our vibrant and inclusive community of about 300 adults and 100 children and teens gathers each week in a beautiful building steeped in Maine history.  As a recognized Welcoming Congregation, we invite people of all genders, races, abilities, sexual orientation, beliefs, backgrounds, and life experiences to join our community. Our mission is simple and inspires all that we do: Nurture the spirit; Grow in community; Help heal the world.

A good way to get to know us and our liberal faith community is to join us for Sunday worship. In fact, we encourage coming a few times as no two services are alike.  Services are at 10AM every Sunday, except the month of July. Services address elements of life, humanity and spirituality, and draw on a variety of religious and spiritual practices from across the globe and history. Through music, readings, poetry, prayer, meditation, ritual, and sermon, we strive to provide a rich and full spiritual experience.

After each service, we invite everyone, newcomer and member alike, to join us for coffee hour and refreshments in the Parish Hall. If you are new and you feel comfortable, please grab a yellow mug which will let community members know that you are new, so they can introduce themselves.

We are committed to being welcoming and accessible for all who would like to join us. We offer childcare for young children as well as Religious Exploration classes for school-aged children, though children are always welcome to stay for the entire service. We have assistive listening devices, large print hymnals and large print orders of service. Our building is wheelchair accessible through a side entrance and chair lift while we work to build a ramp and elevator. If you need an accommodation to attend Sunday service or participate in our church community, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

We hope you’ll find a spiritual home full of love, tolerance, and justice here.
We look forward to meeting you!
